About Johnston’s
The Johnston Legacy
James and Judith Johnston
Caleb Johnston, a third-generation hair artist, upholds a distinguished legacy in the art of hair. The Johnston barbering tradition commenced with James Johnston (JJ), Caleb’s grandfather, an influential barber from 1958-2008. JJ embarked on his hairstyling journey at age 18. Through diligence and cutting-edge styles, he garnered recognition, winning competitions and earning respect within the industry. In 1984, he established the iconic JJ’s in Troy, Michigan, among other ventures.
Joel and Aimee Johnston
Joel, Caleb’s father, entered the barbering realm in 1988 at 16, initially only cutting hair to seize a promising opportunity. Later, he discovered what JJ had seen all along, the profound impact barbers make on people’s lives through their craft. In 2004, Joel took the reins of JJ’s legacy, expanding the Troy location and introducing a barbershop in Novi.
Caleb and Tori Johnston
At age 15, Caleb apprenticed under Joel in the Novi shop. Swiftly mastering the art of men’s hairstyles, he demonstrated excellence and efficiency in the family trade. By age 17, he began managing his father’s barbershop. Over time, Caleb refined his skills, excelling in client communication; understanding personalized preferences; and delivering high-end, professional service. After 11 years, Caleb and his wife, Tori, launched Johnston’s Barbershop, integrating the rich history and tradition of the Johnston name with a focus on luxury and personalized care.
